The Best Way to Go About Coming Up With Gifts Ideas

By: Rod Tilton..

I love the holidays with one exception. Can you guess it? Most of us have the same problem. We simply have trouble coming up with good, unique gift ideas for the people we are buying things for.

Before we get into gift strategies, let me offer one other big tip. Online shopping is the way to go this holiday season. No lines. No traffic. No stress. Yes, you will probably have to go to the mall for some things, but minimize them.

Okay, where do you start with gift ideas? Do you flip through catalogs? How about randomly shopping online? The biggest issue is often getting that first idea and then things begin to flow.

The single best gifting strategy I have seen and used involves focusing on what your target person does in the time they have to themselves. Most would call this their hobby, but you should call it gift idea heaven.

Consider buying a gift for you mom. There are pleny of mother-oriented gifts out there, but what does she like to do in her free time? Does she shop for antiques? Might books on antiques or antiques themselves make a good gift?

To really go the extra step, make a theme out of your gift giving. If you need to give a person multiple gifts, stick to the hobby or area they have an interest in. Think accessories. They will be happy and you will save time.

There is a real secondary advantage to this approach. If you give a gift to someone that they love, particularly if it is related to something they don't talk about a lot, they are going to appreciate the fact that you actually are noticing what they are doing.

In the mad rush to get all your shopping done, it can be easy to substitute your views and tastes for those of the people you are buying. Don't! This is about them, not you. Show your appreciation for them by taking the time to get it right.

It can be really tempting to buy gift certificates if you are in a rush or don't know about an area of interest for a person. Try to avoid giving such gifts as they often aren't used and really say that you don't have time for that person.
