Tips For Holiday Spending

By: Robert Bain

We have all seen those holiday shoppers with a smile on their face and packages in hand. Others seem very strained by the whole process, and that is often due to the financial cost of holiday shopping. For those that have a budget that doesn't leave very much money left over, it can be an uncomfortable time of year. There are plenty of things you can do though to prepare for holiday shopping.

Many banks offer Christmas accounts where you can have a set amount of money placed into the account all year. In many instances you can have it taken directly out of your paycheck so that you make sure it is taken care of. Your money will be accumulating interest as well. You will get a check from the Christmas account on a set date so you can go Christmas shopping.

Some individuals choose to shop all year long and to put things away for Christmas. They often find great values on toys, clothes, household items, and perfume sets. You should take a look at the sales in the days after Christmas as you can save a great deal of money this way too. Just make sure you keep track of what items you have and where you are storing them.

You may have people on your list that really want a certain thing for Christmas. If your goal is to make them happy by providing it, then try to get the very best price on it. Watch the advertisements in the newspapers, go to the sales that are offered, and take a look online. You may find significant savings on that particular item just because of where you end up purchasing it from.

Plan ahead by making a list of who you need to shop for. This way you can get a realistic idea of how much you can spend on each person. Too many people make the mistake of putting their holiday gifts on credit cards. They are still paying those bills several months after the holidays have passed. When you add in the cost of interest payments as well, the holiday season was really an expensive one.

Work hard to cut down your shopping list too. There are many different ways you can do this. My husbands family is very large and so we draw names and agree to purchase gifts for the children only. This means we are only having to purchase two gifts for his side of the family. My girlfriends and I don't buy Christmas gifts for each other or for each other's children to help us cut down on the expenses as well.

There are plenty of great gifts you can give to people for the holidays that don't have to be expensive. You can make homemade gifts that they will really enjoy. You can bake cookies and treats to give to them instead. You can also make your own gift certificates that they can redeem for various things. Some good ones are for a make over at your home, free babysitting, housecleaning, and anything else you know they will enjoy.

Really put some thought into your holiday gifts. You need to be realistic about the cost of them so that you can budget wisely. If you can't afford what you want to give someone then you need to look for a better option. Too many people get themselves into terrible financial shape around the holidays. Never spend money that is for your bills and necessities for holiday gifts.
