How to make scented candles

Making scented candles can be great fun! From small votive candles to decorated pillars, dipped tapers to whimsical molded candles, you can make it all with just a few simple candle making supplies like the wax, wick, colour, aroma oils, the mould etc. These are the basic materials used to make just any kind of scented candles like pillar candles, tealight candles and taper candles. You could get a little more creative and use glitter glue, sequence, glitter pens, dry leaves, buttons or just about anything to give the candle that beautiful look. First thing that you will need is the wax that you can buy off from the shops in the form of small wax gratings for parafin wax, bees wax, soy wax etc, or you can also use jelly wax if you want to make jelly scented candles. You can also burn old or the small pieces of left over candles to make new scented candles.

Once you have the wax in place you will need something to burn it in. It is very important to use vessels with a non-stick coating on it or you might have a tough time trying to scrape the left over wax from the used vessel. Mostly double boilers are used to melt wax in. Then you have to do the wicks, the colors and the mould. The length of the wick should be selected according to the height of the mould. The most important part of the scented candles is the perfume that is used in it. It is very important to use scents that are particularly used in making scented candles since only they will have the ability to retain the perfume even after burning it at a very high temperature. You can also use aroma oils which help in healing a number or ailments according to the oil used in the process. The most important fact that should be kept in mind is that most of the oils that are manufactured are very strong so just a few drops of it for a single big candle should be sufficient. There is a point where if you add too much aroma oil or the perfume the candle might not burn properly.

Next is the wick of the candle. There are many wicks that you can choose from that mainly differ in its thickness. For bigger scented candles like pillar candles thicker wicks are always chosen, and thin ones for smaller candles such as taper candles. Once you have all the materials in place your work is half done. After that all you’ll have to do is boil the right amount of wax in a double boiler. The quantity of the wax you take depends upon the size of the candle that you make. Once the wax is molten you can add color and the required oil in it, in the right amounts. After it all blends in well together pour it into the mould. Make sure that you already have the wick in position in the mould that can be affixed at the bottom and the excess wick on the top can be rolled over any object, like a pencil which will hold the wick temporarily in place in your pillar candle or taper candle. Once that is done leave the setting alone for a few hours so it would settle to form solid wax scented candles. You can burn it and enjoy the aroma of the oils and your creative work, or just present it to your loved ones.
